Why It's Important to Test Your Fitness

You may be starting a program with a new trainer who wants to be able to show you progress over time. Knowing where you're starting out is a good first step.

Are you middle-aged or older? If you need to use your hands and knees to get up and down, you're almost seven times more likely to die in the next 6 years.

Published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the sitting rising test is a good indicator of longevity. If you're older, this test is highly valuable for you.

Why else is it important to test your fitness?

What Breakthrough Are You Looking For?

If you're in the market for personal training, some people will try and get you into the door by offering you a free fitness assessment. The idea of testing in itself is very valuable but, we have to put this in perspective.

What the heck are we testing for?

When you're taking time out to perform a test, you should have a very specific reason for performing a test. If you don't have a reason, you shouldn't be performing a test.

Some great reasons for testing include:

  • Seeing where you're at before starting a new fitness program
  • Gaining insight into common markers of good health
  • Playing a sport and wanting to improve performance
  • Retesting to see how your current fitness plan is performing

If you have a goal in mind, it might be a good idea to test. Testing might be able to tell you what you're missing out on in your program. You might be training with a goal in mind but, not actually doing training that leads to progress.

There is no one set way to perform an assessment. Different tests measure different abilities.

If you get your fitness assessed somewhere, you should have the intention of joining that gym. A fitness assessment by itself won't tell you much. An assessment only useful in the context of your goals and your current fitness routine.
