According to Wikipedia, Crunch Fitness is a commercial gym franchise founded in 1989 by Doug Levine.

Between the United States, Canada, and Australia, Crunch has over 300 locations.

Crunch seems to be your typical commercial gym with related google searches including:

  • Planet Fitness
  • Gold's Gym
  • Anytime Fitness
  • Orange Theory Fitness
  • F45 Training

Characteristically of a big gym, members note that Crunch has loads of equipment, hidden fees, and issues with attempted cancellations.

The same experience seems to be true of the Columbia location with a couple recent reviews noting:

  • "They advertise 24/7 access - nope. The bathrooms and equipment are dirty already...I tried to cancel my membership once I found out about these issues...Then I learn I have to pay the entire year before canceling." - Mike H. Google Review
  • "I will be canceling my membership after today...I would reconsider a membership, but as of right now I would never even want to step foot in a place where people are rude right when you walk in the front door." - Sarah Lee Google Review

As a Wilson's fitness member for the last 6 years, I was curious to see if it made sense to cut my membership from $52 to $10. I guess not. Please read the rest of the reviews for yourself, they passive aggressive.

It was a little hard to write this without laughing a bit at how cringe-worthy some of Crunch Columbia's posts were including;

Is Crunch Fitness Good for Beginners?

All jokes aside, Crunch Fitness is good for beginners who aren't intimidated by gym vibes.

With a plethora of exercise equipment, you're likely to find a way of exercising that you enjoy which we love at SSF. If you identify exercise with positive feelings, you're more likely to motivate yourself to do it.

Beginners should focus on the basic exercises:

  • Upper Body Pushing
  • Upper Body Pulling
  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Hip Hinges
  • Loaded Carries

Crunch has all the equipment. Some people find machines more approachable when learning to feel exercises in individual muscle groups.

If you can manage to use temptation bundling, you might be able to get yourself to use those miles of cardio equipment.

Is it Easy to Cancel Crunch Fitness Membership?

In an Instagram post on 10/29/21, Crunch Columbia, Mo claims that you can "cancel anytime". The terms and conditions listed on the location page tell a different story.

Based on the experience of people in other locations, Crunch membership will not be easy to cancel.

Disturbingly, according to Best Company;

"Crunch is known for being very inconsistent with their initiation fees, hidden dues, and monthly rates. Typical enrollment fees are $239.98, which are extremely pricey for chain gyms. We found the industry average to range between $100 and $150...Crunch had the highest quantity of and most expensive hidden fees. This makes being a member-which appears to be cost-effective at first-to be an expensive proposition."

In the same post that mentions canceling anytime, you'll notice some small print;

  • "*All memberships have an annual fee of only $49.99 which is due 60 days after enrollment".
  • " **A $1.50 processing fee will apply to all monthly dues. For memberships that are paid with a checking account, this fee is waived".

Is Crunch a good gym? that will be for you to decide in the future. It's not always easy to make it to the gym. Remember to focus on finding an experience that you enjoy showing up for.
