Get More Carbs and Fat Without Just Eating a Cookie

How do you get more carbs and healthy fat in your diet without just eating a cookie? Here are some places to start.

"How do I get more carbs and fat in my diet without just eating a cookie?" This was a real question that someone asked. It's a good question. Without coming up with a totally exhaustive list of potential food sources, there are a few places you can start.

Carbohydrate Sources

Typically you won't hear someone ask how they can get more carbs. In society it's more common to hear someone mention that they're trying to cut carbs. Usually it has to do with following some super special diet that demonizes carbs and is outside the scope of this article.

Here are some examples of sources you might look to for carbs:

  • Oats (Quick, Rolled or Old Fashioned, Steel-Cut etc.)
  • Barley
  • Red, White, Brown, Wild Rice
  • Quinoa
  • Amarath
  • Whole Grain Pasta
  • Sprouted Grains or Breads
  • Purple, Red or Golden Potatoes
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Beans and Lentils
  • Fruits!

Healthy Fat Sources

If Oreo's were healthy I'd stop there and call it a day, slight obsession. Sadly you cannot live on Oreo's alone so you might want to consider consuming other fat source options including;

  • Avocado
  • Butter
  • Cold-Pressed Oils (Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, Walnut Oil, Pumpkin Seed Oil, Etc.)
  • Unsalted Nuts (Almonds, Cashews, Pecans, Brazil Nuts, Etc.)
  • Unsalted Seeds (Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Etc.)
  • Flax Seeds
  • Chia Seeds
  • Coconut
  • Nut Butters (Peanut, Almond, Sunflower Seed (yes that's a thing?) Etc.)

Hopefully this list is really helpful for you and begins to get new ideas churning in your head. I've just recently truly learned how to cook things besides chicken, oatmeal and cereal (I'm counting it). Just a couple of new foods can keep my  curiosity satisfied for weeks. Give a couple a shot!
